Earlier this year, the IRS made the news when it announced that it expected nearly half of the calls it gets this tax season to go unanswered. Wait times for those that get through are expected to be over 30 minutes. Meanwhile, there has been a surge in aggressive and threatening phone calls from scam artists who impersonate IRS agents to steal money and identities.
Strained by budget cuts and a declining staff, the IRS is just one example of a government agency that is working with limited resources and a looking like a big target for fraudsters. Another is law enforcement.
So-called ‘swatting’ attacks have become an expensive and dangerous problem across the country in the past few years, and disgruntled attackers call police to report fake violent crimes. Law enforcement must then send SWAT teams and armed police to investigate, often finding nothing and scaring innocent families.
Fraud in the call center is a significant problem for government agencies. The IRS itself estimates that it is losing $3 billion to $5 billion a year to fraudsters, many of whom operate as part of sophisticated fraud rings. The full cost of a single swatting attack can run into the tens of thousands of dollars.

- What types of attacks do cybersecurity SMEs see trending over the next one to three years?
- Are there truly any new attacks? Or are there simply more adversaries, better funded, using the same old tricks to evade detection and defenses?
